Theft of old postboxes

Villagers on the Shropshire/Herefordshire border are being urged to keep a close eye on their postboxes after a series of thefts.

Since the start of April, there have been a number of thefts of red Royal Mail postboxes from villages including Burford near Tenbury Wells.

The boxes are the cast iron types attached to telegraph poles and other posts and are valued at about £60 each. Some are very old and bear the VR mark from Queen Victoria’s reign.

Police are unsure whether they are being stolen for their scrap value or for the antique market.

The person who calls himself bartertrading on eBay actually sells fake postboxes. He sent one over to China and they copied it and sent him a container full back. It costs him roughly £16 per box. He has also had the chinese foundry copy a GR lamp box. Unfortunately most people pay well over the odds for the reproductions thinking they are the real 'McCoy'. Before anyone fancies making a few bob selling that rusty piece of cast iron laying round the back of the DO think again. The IB have a dedicated team down in London who scour Ebay checking whos selling what. Ebay also runs a programme that scans photographs and key words before passing the info on to that team.

Mostly that's for uniform, selling replica postboxes is only illegal if they claim them to be original.

Hello,

I am new to the forum and just dug up this info about replica postboxes. I am thinking of setting up in business making replica royal mail postboxes and hiring them out as Wedding postboxes as per this company http://www.yourweddingpostbox.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Is it true it is only illegal to make/sell replica postboxes if you claim they are original?

I would of course be advetising that they are replica and made out of fibreglass and obviously a scaled down version.

Thanks
