Edingburgh Postal workers stage 24-hour strike

POSTAL workers will stage a one-day strike today in the Capital in protest over modernisation reforms at Royal Mail.

The 24-hour walkout follows a ballot held by the Communication Workers' Union earlier this month.

Union officials had initially predicted that the strike would cause massive disruption, but Royal Mail today said it had "robust" contingency plans in place.

A spokesman for the company said: "Mail will be collected from every post box and post office in the city. We will also ensure collections are made from our business customers with as little disruption as possible.

"With mail volumes falling by eight to ten per cent year-on-year as a result of accelerating competition from the internet and e-mail, and the recession, it is essential that Royal Mail continues its drive to modernise and increase efficiency while keeping our focus firmly on high-quality customer service.

"No-one has left the business as a result of the reorganisation in Edinburgh who did not wish to leave."

More than 170 workers at Royal Mail's Sighthill depot and their colleagues in Perth took part in the ballot after a series of cost-cutting measures which union officials said had already led to voluntary redundancies.

The union said the action was part of a national campaign to get bosses back round the negotiating table.

What a load of bollocks..........mail in our office very heavy. "High quality Customer service " yes we see this every day with mail being left and packets lying for a week+. So who 's kidding who.

I've decide to ask my customers if they feel the mail volumes are falling, I know whet their answer would be,
I bet if we all did a straw poll round the doors, we could prove once and for all, that R.M are telling porkies.
