Woman finds unopened mail in loft

A WOMAN says she was shocked to find stacks of unopened post in her loft.

But nearly a year after Alyson Philbin reported the find to the Royal Mail the envelopes have still not been collected.

"I find it amazing how we are still left with what must be hundreds of bits of mail which haven't been opened," said Mrs Philbin, 44.

She came across the mail last May when she was clearing out the loft in her home in Steadfold Close, Bulwell, soon after she moved into the house.

The mail has several different names and addresses on them, most of it for the Bulwell area.

She told the Royal Mail about it and was expecting someone would collect it all. But she is still waiting.

"I did hand some to the postman but there is far too much to just hand it all to him," she said.

"He said he would get someone from the Royal Mail to get in touch to arrange something but I'm still waiting.

"I was very surprised to find all the post. All I was doing was clearing out the loft. I didn't expect to find that.

"It is all going to different places, though most of it is for this area. There could be very important mail which people haven't had delivered.

"I don't know what it is doing up there. The only thing I can think of is that a postman may have lived here previously."

Mrs Philbin decided to contact the Post after reading about the case of Rex Wyatt, of Toton, who had mail delivered five years late. After complaining to the Royal Mail, he was offered a book of stamps as compensation.

Mrs Philbin said: "I would have thought after reporting this that the Royal Mail would have organised for the post to be collected.

"But they really didn't seem too concerned when I told them about it. Having to wait this long for something to be done is just ridiculous."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We would like to apologise to Mr and Mrs Philbin for our failure to contact them, along with our thanks for keeping the mail safe. Arrangements will be made to collect the mail and inquiries will be made to establish its origin."

They probably did a quick background check, found there was no one they could sack because they had already left the business, and promptly forgot all about it.
