Union lays down the law to Brown

One of the country's biggest trade unions is warning Gordon Brown he will lose its support unless he stops 'venomous' infighting in the wake of the e-mail slurs scandal.

Dave Prentis, general secretary of the Unison public sector union, will say today: 'Our time and patience is running out.'

If Unison, which last year donated £1.8million to Labour, withdraws its backing it will cost the party a tenth of its funding and leave it in even deeper financial trouble.

But the scandal shows little sign of abating, with Labour Party general secretary Ray Collins yesterday forced to deny claims he was involved with disgraced former Downing Street aide Damian McBride in setting up a website to spread unfounded personal stories about Conservative MPs.

Senior Labour figures have admitted the scandal has damaged the party. It has also cost Mr McBride, a close Brown associate who sent e-mails containing lurid allegations about leading Tories, his job.

Today, Mr Prentis will warn Labour it is losing the 'support and trust' of health and public service workers as it offers 'carrots for the rich, the stick for the poor'.

He will tell his union's annual conference: 'The country is in a mess and we look to the government to come up with serious solutions, not to waste time in childish venom. It must draw a line under recent scandals and petty point-scoring, and show a united, determined effort to work to the people's agenda.'

Mr Prentis will also tell the government it has a 'last chance' to win back workers' support in Wednesday's budget. He will add: 'The rich bankers and greedy speculators who got us into the mess are rewarded with huge bail-outs... while ordinary workers, expecting to put in a fair day's work for a fair day's pay, are rewarded with threats of job cuts, low or no pay and privatisation.'

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
