A SWANSEA Valley postwoman conned her neighbours out of £10,000 by fooling them into thinking they had entered into a money-making pension fund, a court has heard.
Margaret Rees, of Wern Road in Ystalyfera, also told her next door neighbour she needed £2000 to pay drug dealers who had threatened to burn down her home.
Neath magistrates heard how the 51-year-old had also forged signatures of guarantors to secure loans and then stole their mail so they would never find out about the scam.
The court heard the web of deceit lasted almost seven years before she was caught out when a letter from the loan company arrived at the home of one of the unaware guarantors.
Prosecutor Andrew Fouracre told the court the crimes began in 2002 when Rees went for a loan with the Post Office’s Communication Workers Friendly Society (CWFS).
“As part of the loan application she was required to have two guarantors,” he said.
“She forged their signatures and they had no knowledge they were being used.”
“This continued until March 2008 when one of the guarantors, Marion Dixon, received a letter from the loan company saying she owed £851.68,” he said.
“The defendant had also been offering members of the community the chance to invest in a Post Office pension scheme where they would double their money in a six-month period.
“She did this to her neighbours who invested £10,000,” he said.
The money was invested in December 2007 but the couple are yet to receive it all back although the court heard Rees was repaying in monthly installments.
Another charge related to an incident last month when Rees told neighbour Nesta Davies, whose house adjoins Rees’, drug dealers had threatened to burn down her house unless they were given £2000.
Rees pleaded guilty to three charges of fraud, including one against CWFS, and two charges of stealing mail.
She also asked for eight charges of stealing mail to be taken into consideration.
Martin Probert, defending, told the court: “She feels the guarantors would have been happy to have signed the documents and that there wouldn’t have been a problem if she’d only asked.
“She didn’t think she’d fall behind with repayments so they would never have had to know.
He added: “She knows she has done wrong and there are civil proceedings in place to get the money back.”
Magistrates decided their sentencing powers of 12 months imprisonment were insufficient and Rees will now appear at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, May 11.

A last! They're taking a case seriously, and looking for a proper sentence for her. Hopefully, it will work as a deterrant, to stop others interfering with the Mail.
