Wem postman Simon Harrison rewarded for helping to track down armed robber

A POSTMAN who helped track down an armed robber will be awarded a commendation for his actions.

Simon Harrison, 34, from Wem, wrote down the registration number of a van whose driver was acting suspiciously while doing his rounds on November 14, 2007.

What he didn’t know was that the driver had a gun and was just about to rob Loppington Post Office.

After hearing of the robbery the next day, Mr Harrison passed the number on to the police. His information enabled them to trace the offender.

Mr Harrison’s actions were praised publicly by a Crown Court judge and West Midlands Police, which has awarded him a divisional commendation.

The citation says he is commended for his ‘diligence in taking down the number of a van he felt was acting suspiciously, enabling police to quickly identify the offender’.

Sgt Julian Hinds, of Wem police, said of the offence: “A masked man had gone into the village post office brandishing a handgun and threatening a female member of staff. He escaped with around £750.

“Mr Harrison saw the offender’s van prior to the robbery while doing his postal round.

“It drew his suspicion as initially it was without number plates and then subsequently, he saw it with number plates on. He took the registration number and passed it to police officers the following day.”

When he appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court, the 30-year-old offender admitted robbery and possessing a firearm and was jailed for six years.

In court, Judge Robin Onions praised Mr Harrison’s actions.

His commendation will be presented by Chief Superintendent Andy Rowsell at a ceremony in Shrewsbury next month.
