Post strike would be 'last resort'

A postal worker has said Royal Mail staff will only go on strike as an “absolute last resort”.

Staff at Watford's Ascot Road sorting office threatened to go on strike following the suspension of Bob Kennedy, a health and safety officer, at the branch.

Speaking to the Watford Observer earlier today, a source from inside the depot, who is also a Communication Workers' Union member, said a disciplinary hearing had been planned for Tuesday.

He said the union was willing to waiting for the results of the hearing before it was prepared to comment on how likely strike action was.

However, he said: “It would be an ultimate and an absolute last resort as far as we are concerned.

“We have our view on it and the management will obviously have their view on it but we will have to wait until the proceedings are over.

“Tuesday is the next meeting and we don't actually know until then if there are going to be any formal charges.”

The development is likely to cause deep concern for businesses and residents in Watford, with memories fresh from the last post strike.

In 2007, industrial action by Royal Mail workers caused a huge backlog of undelivered letters and parcels.

As services in the town were effectively crippled, piles of post built up, with residents missing vital hospital appointments and businesses waiting weeks for invoices.

The source did, however, say there was a lot of support for their colleague.

“He doesn't only cover Watford, he covers the whole area, so there is a bit of groundswell of support, I must admit, but what we have said is we must wait until the outcome of the hearing before we can comment officially.”
