Wigan's postal union has hit back at accusations that posties are contributing to litter.
Wigan-based Keep Britain Tidy slammed postal workers across the country for dropping rubber bands in the streets.
Posties use the red elastic bands to hold together piles of letters while on their rounds. The litter campaigners said that the discarded rubber bands are found on 6% of Britain's streets.
But Paul Fenney, branch secretary of Wigan Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: "I live in Wigan and I have not seen any elastic bands on the floor myself. Postmen and women in the area are very conscientious not to drop anything on the floor.
"It is not very nice at all if postal workers are getting the blame for littering the streets. We seem to be getting the blame for a lot recently."
Dickie Felton, from the anti-litter organisation, said: "The problem in Wigan mirrors the national picture. Rubber bands are an issue right across the North West and the country."
A Royal Mail spokesman said "Royal Mail regularly stresses to its postmen and women the importance of avoiding litter and the vast majority of our rubber bands are recycled, with millions being reused every week."
