Loblaw to offers more full-time jobs

if any -- workers at Loblaw Great Foods in Collingwood will reap from a company promise to create 10,000 new full-time jobs.
That change in policy was announced last week by Loblaw president Allan Leighton at the 2009 CIBC Markets Retail conference in Toronto.
Traditionally, Loblaw has had a staff ratio of about 77-per-cent part-timers to 23-per-cent full-time people. Leighton said that's about to change in an effort to reduce staff turnover.
The company has been seeing about 50-percent staff turnover every three months, Leighton told the conference, and that's been primarily among the part-time staff. Converting many of those position to full-time is predicted to reduce that turnover, as well as increase earnings for the workers.
According to Leighton's numbers, full-time staff earn 50-per-cent more than part-time workers. Turnover among full-time staff is 90- per-cent lower than part-time workers as well.
Leighton or anyone at the local level was not available for an interview with theEnterprise- Bulletin,company spokespeople said. They offered this statement.
"We believe there is an opportunity to increase the number of our full-time jobs by 10,000 across Loblaw Companies Limited," they stated. "Increasing our full-time workforce would not only benefit our colleagues, but also our store productivity.
"We want to work with the unions and government to determine if this is possible, as we think it is the right thing to do and it would benefit the Canadian economy. At this time, it is too early to make any conclusions regarding specific stores."
