Ellesmere Mayor has slammed Royal Mail for their response to fears of sorting office closure

ELLESMERE mayor Geoff Elner has slammed Royal Mail for its response to the town’s fears that its postal sorting office is to close.

There have been rumours since January the facility will close on April 1 and transfer to Oswestry.

Cllr Elner said: “People are very riled at what seems an underhand approach by Royal Mail.

“We have written to them as we have heard from post office staff that the sorting office will close – but they say no firm decision has been made.

“We have demanded a meeting with them this week and started a petition which we urge townspeople to sign.

“It would be helpful if people also write letters themselves in protest.”

He added: “We are enlarging the town and it is a service people expect. Why Ellesmere?

“The last time this came up, Royal Mail’s costings did not stack up in terms of the savings they would make and we are asking to see their figures.”

He added local jobs are at risk.

Jaquie Stenson, external relations manager with Royal Mail Central and West, said: “Faced with full competition and declining mail volumes, we constantly review the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all our units, including Ellesmere.

“We have no confirmed plans for Ellesmere yet but would not rule out the possibility of a move.”
