Royal Mail worker in rooftop protest

A ROYAL Mail employee today protested on the roof of Burslem delivery office, demanding an apology 17 months after being suspended.

Postal worker Paul Dawson used ladders to scale the Scotia Road depot from about 4am this morning.

The 39-year-old was among 12 workers suspended by Royal Mail in September 2007 over allegations of bullying and harassment. He said he has since been exonerated, but has never received an apology.

Protests have been held at Royal Mail offices in Kidsgrove and Stoke in recent weeks, which the company has described as disruptive.

Mr Dawson said this morning: "I am not coming down until I get the apology I am entitled to in writing from a senior manager, as promised after myself and 11 of my colleagues were suspended."

Officers from Staffordshire Police had been called to the Scotia Road depot by 8am after Mr Dawson began his protest.

The CWU said no allegations made against him have been proven.

Of the 12 suspended, five have been sacked and are currently fighting to be returned to work through hearings and tribunals.

The bitter row led to weeks of strike action in Burslem.

CWU area representative Malcolm Brundrett said Mr Dawson was owed an apology.

He said: "I understand Paul's frustration. This is an indictment about how frustrated he is about his treatment and the business's failings in how they tried to discipline Paul Dawson."

The Sentinel reported on a protest outside Stoke sorting office last week and a spokesman for Royal Mail said all cases are being handled in accordance with its conduct procedures.

Needless to say it caused trouble but RM deliberately put these idiots in to soften people up but they're just merely tools ( right there ! ) in a management structure that runs for the benefit of the managers inside it .

RM had to pay Paul's sick pay due to their instuitionalized stupidity ,I'm not surprised it affected someone as due to all the politics and that very inflexible ,top down regimented management by dictat , he's in the middle of something out of a surreal nightmare novel devoid of all common sense and reasoning , might as well screw something out of that shower .

It's one big Mexican stand off that RM nor the CWU can afford to lose , RM can't because 1 . Everything is purely to impress and to a perverse conclusion 2 . They 're hardly going to admit that they act in such a illegal & underhand manner , they operate at the very limit of employment law at the very best of times .
