A BARRY postie who has raised more than £23,000 for cancer charities has been nominated for a prestigious national award.
Judges have shortlisted 52-year-old Pauline Eastment as one of nine postmen and postwomen considered to go the "extra mile" in the communities where they live and work.
Pauline began raising money 10 years ago – a year after being treated for breast cancer and getting the all-clear – and was selected from almost 100 entries put forward by Royal Mail customers and managers throughout Wales.
The postwoman of 14 years, started fundraising for cancer charities 10 years ago.
Her epic efforts include raising £1,400 from a Moon Walk in London, a tandem skydive, a trek to Everest Base Camp and a walk along the Great Wall of China – while this year she is off to conquer the Grand Canyon.
The mum-of-one, of St Athan, said: "I was so inspired by the help and support I received after being diagnosed myself and thankfully recovering.
"I vowed then to raise money in whatever way I could."
"I always pay my own way for every trip and thoroughly enjoy the experience.
"But I wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t raising money for charity as well. I am lucky because the people on the RAF camp where I work and the people of St Athan pledge money every time," she said.
Huw Roberts, Director of Welsh Affairs, Royal Mail Group, said: "People like Pauline are the unsung heroes who get involved in the community.
"They are the people who customers and Royal Mail feel deserve some extra recognition and appreciation for their efforts."
Pauline receives £100 shortlist prize money and goes through to the Welsh final with £500 in prize money at stake.
The national final in London at the end of March will reveal the overall UK Postman or Woman of the Year 2009, who will win a £2,000 family holiday and cash prize.
