Gwent posties up for bravery awards

TWO posties have been nominated for an award for first class service to their customers.

Postman Mike Mogford, who came to the aid of an elderly woman who had collapsed in her bedroom, is up for the Royal Mail First Class Awards’s hero category.

The fundraising work of Chepstow’s Joe Farrell, who has raised £10,000 from doing his rounds in his shorts, also earned him a nomination in the fundraising category.

Mr Mogford, from Abercarn, was knocking on the door of one of his customers in Crumlin with a parcel when he heard a cry for help from an elderly man, whose wife had collapsed in their bedroom.

He said: "He was in a real panic and asked me to help him. He led me to the bedroom where his wife appeared to have collapsed in bed."

The postman saw that she was in a bad way. Luckily Mr Mogford had completed first aid training while working with a local rugby team in his spare time, and was able to put her in a recovery position and call for an ambulance.

His actions were praised by the emergency services who said she had helped save the woman’s life.

Meanwhile, Joe Farrell MBE, 62, was nominated for his efforts to raise money for charity by completing his rounds wearing shorts.

He started raising cash for breast cancer groups, but after bearing the cold for one winter was encouraged to continue for the St David’s Foundation hospice.

"I thought why not and now work colleagues have persuaded me to wear shorts again - this time for prostate cancer - so we are all wearing shorts through the winter. The cold is worth it for the money we will raise," he said.

The winners will be revealed at the end of March.
