A postman was caught trying to steal birthday cards in a Post Office sting.

Richard Knowles, 32, fell under suspicion after bosses at the Westham branch in Pevensey found opened cards in a recycling bin.

They set up a sting using test cards to be delivered to addresses on Knowles round.

Investigators were watching when he failed to deliver the cards to the address they were intended for in November 2007.

Denis Bailey, prosecuting, said Knowles was seen rummaging in his delivery trolley after delivering to a house.

Investigators stopped him and found four opened cards in his jacket pocket, Hove Crown Court was told yesterday.

Knowles, of Pride View, Pevensey, admitted attempting to steal the contents of the cards but told bosses he had changed his mind after opening them.

Roger Booth, defending, said Knowles was of previous good character and had been sacked from his £300-a-week job.

He was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and must do 200 hours unpaid community work.

Recorder Michael Hopmeier told him: "These were greetings cards which makes these particularly mean offences.

"They were deliberate and thoroughly dishonest offences and a breach of trust placed in you by your employers and the public."
