Concerns have been raised about job cuts for postal workers whose offices are already short staffed.

A Halstead postal workers’ union spokesman said full time vacancies would only be filled by part-time workers and the threat of job losses was looming.

Royal Mail will be shaving four - five per cent off the running costs of delivery offices in Halstead, Great Yeldham and Sible Hedingham, according to Peter Boulton, area delivery rep of the communication workers’ union.

He said: “No one knows whether they will have a job from one minute to the next."

James Taylor, Royal Mail spokesman, said: "We have not finalised any changes in these areas but we continue to talk with our people and the unions on the need to cut overheads and central costs while at the same time safeguarding services to our customers."
