A POSTIE who has raised £10,000 for the RNLI is in with a chance of top award.

Postman Antony Simpson has been shortlisted for a Royal Mail gong in recognition of his charity fundraising.

Antony, who works in the Stranraer Delivery Office, has made it on to the shortlist in the 1st Class People Awards 2009, which aims to celebrate posties who are unsung heroes in their communities.

Antony has raised £10,000 through various fundraising activities for the RNLI over the last two years.

He is the helmsman for Stranraer RNLI and has been a volunteer for 14 years. During that time, Antony has been involved in a number of rescues and helped saved a number of people.

Despite sometimes spending his evenings on search and rescue operations, he always reports for his shift at the Royal Mail Delivery Office at the normal time.

Antony will receive £100 prize money for being shortlisted, and now has the chance to win the overall Scottish fundraising title, which will be announced in early March.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been nominated for this award. I hope it will raise awareness of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which does so much fantastic work and makes such a big difference to people's lives in Stranraer."

Customers were invited to nominate Royal Mail workers they thought were unsung heroes of the community. Scottish winners from each category will be selected from this shortlist, and will then be invited to attend a national award ceremony on 30 March.
