DISABLED customers hit out at the Post Office this week for dropping their special service.

Halton Lea Post Office in Runcorn used to give priority to people who had difficulty walking by offering two disabled counters.

“They’ve just taken them away,” said incensed Joan Waring, from Runcorn, who has difficulty walking after a hip replacement.

“They told me to wait in the ordinary queue or sit down on one of the chairs.

“But if you do that and then get up when it’s your turn, people will think you’re pushing in.”

Since the Post Office moved into the back of WH Smith, she said it’s been difficult for the disabled to gain access.

“Monday is pension day and it’s really busy.

“There are a lot of people who find it difficult to stand up for a long time,” said Mr Waring.

She said she complained to the manager and was told the disabled counters will now be used for foreign currency and business.

A Post Office spokesman said: “Post Office Ltd recognises the needs of all its customers, particularly those with special requirements.

“A number of seats are provided at Runcorn Post Office for customers who are unable to stand in the queue and staff are always willing to help any customers who may need further assistance.”
