A NEWMARKET postman has been jailed for nine months after stealing hundreds of pounds of cash and gift vouchers from greetings cards.

Kevin Allen, 47, was handed the sentence at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court on Thursday after admitting three charges of theft at an earlier hearing, including stealing cash and vouchers worth £200 from up 100 letters, stealing £45 from two parcels and stealing five DVDs.

Presiding magistrate Meg Clibbon said she believed the offences were so serious that custody was the only option.

She told the court that Allen, of Manderston Road, had breached the trust of the public with the post office.

"You stole the loving greetings and private wishes from individuals which were never intended to be shared with post office workers," she said.

The court heard that the offences were carried out over a two-year period between September 2006 and September 2008.

Hugh Cauthery, prosecuting for Royal Mail, said a staff member had seen Allen, who had worked for Newmarket's delivery office for 18 years, taking mail from another bag and putting them into his trolley in July last year.

An investigation was launched after Royal Mail was informed of the incident and Allen was put under surveillance.

Test packages containing valuables were planted by investigators in Allen's postbag on three separate occasions before he was caught out in September.

The court heard that gift vouchers for £25 and £7 were found on Allen when he was searched, as well as £45 in cash.

Rental DVDs and plastic bags containing torn up envelopes and mistreated greetings cards were also discovered following a search of his home.

Magistrates heard that Allen admitted stealing the items when confronted, confessing that he had been stealing packages for several months and the DVDs two years before.

Mr Cauthery said Allen admitted stealing 100 greeting cards containing £200 in cash by sorting some mail not intended for his round and stealing the contents when out on his delivery.

Mr Cauthery told magistrates that Allen, who has since resigned from the post office, had financial difficulties and had used the money to help pay his rent.

Jeremy Kendall, mitigating, said Allen had watched the DVD at home and did not return it and this had escalated.

He said the gift vouchers had remained unused because Allen was too scared to spend them.

Mr Kendall told the court that Allen showed immediate remorse for his actions by offering to pay £200 to investigators.

He said Allen, whose marriage had ended in 2001, had financial difficulties and struggled to pay bills after moving into a house on his own.

"He is going to learn a very painful lesson," said Mr Kendall.

"He has lost a job which he enjoyed, lost his good character and possibly lost his pension entitlement."

It never ceases to amaze me, the type of "mitigating circumstances", they use in these cases:
Jeremy Kendall, mitigating, said Allen had watched the DVD at home and did not return it and this had escalated.
So if he'd returned the DVDs after watching them, that would have been ok?
What a pathetic excuse! If one of us, broke into someone's house, watched their DVDs, and locked up behind us. Would we be let off?
Of course not! People like Jeremy and Allen, make me sick! :Sick

He said the gift vouchers had remained unused because Allen was too scared to spend them.
And why was he too scared to use them?
Because THEY WERE STOLEN! How is that a mitigating circumstance!?!?!?

Mr Kendall told the court that Allen showed immediate remorse for his actions by offering to pay £200 to investigators.
Of course he was sorry for what he'd done. He'd just been caught! That isn't remorse. This Lawyer, really needs to buy a dictionary. And the £200 offered to the Investigators?
Was it remorse (see above), or more likley, an attempt to bribe them?

He said Allen, whose marriage had ended in 2001, had financial difficulties and struggled to pay bills after moving into a house on his own.
How many times are we going to see this excuse?
FFS Lots of people have had serious financial difficulties. Do we all start stealing to pay our debts?
NO. We struggle to pay them off, because we're HONEST!
And if he's so poor. How did he manage to have £200 available to offer to the Investigators? :hmmmm

"He is going to learn a very painful lesson," said Mr Kendall.
Good. But why is that considered to be a mitigating circumstance?
Isn't it the point of sentancing?

"He has lost a job which he enjoyed, lost his good character and possibly lost his pension entitlement."
Again. Why is that considered to be a mitigating circumstance?
It's the whole point of catching him.

I just wish they'd give these people longer sentences, so that it would work as a deterrant. Bear in mind, that he'll probably be out in under 3 months! :arrrghhh We need a better deterrant, to stop these people getting tempted! :evil/mad :arrrghhh :hmmmm

"lost his good character" Someone who steals doesn't have 'good character' to lose, They must think that anything is acceptable until you're caught.

It never cease to amaze me how some people who should know better do something stupid, from Juveniles I would consider it a youthful mistake and can be put down to experience and not reoffend again, it happens, to somebody of 40, 50 , 60 year of age who had enough life experience to know crime doesn't pay, in my Office we had a sad case of one man, who was 55 he has been sent down for stealing Special deliveries and packets over a period of time, he has been in the job about 35 years, consequence Prison time, lost his Pension, lost his Job (obviously), his reputation, I haven't seen him since, this is about 4 years ago, so I would imagine he is either dead or moved away.

Same another lad many years ago, who worked in a Locker, has a child and girlfirend, which you would have thought made him a responsable person, but no he stole special deliveries over a period of time, apparently it was quite a lot of money, he was lucky not to be sent down but still has a criminal record and has to pay it all back.
 :d'oh! :d'oh!

I would never consider any of this, I even had some hard times when I first brought my house 15 years ago and was living off basic food, supermarket own labels, relying on my Parents help on occasions, all my money went on the house, I was really struggling, I was never tempted to steal or rob, I am now in a much better financial position than ever, I got through but by God it was hard.

Anyone weaker willed might have been tempted.

Its all to do with strength of character and upholding your own convictions. Bit like striking or cross a picket line to be honest, if you stick to your values (whichever side of the picket line) then you will have some pride and will get due recognition for it. If however, you sneak around ........ :hmmmm .

Just my thoughts.
