Crosby dog owner warns of rubber band threat to pets

A DOG owner is warning that elastic bands dropped on pavements by postal workers are endangering pets.

Richard Old, 66, of The Byway, has said his Samoyed, Kimi, has swallowed “more than he could remember.”

His previous Samoyed, Jenna, needed surgery after one of the bands became wrapped around her intestines. She had a second operation for a separate illness and died of pneumonia after undergoing the two so close together.

Richard is calling on Royal Mail to stop postal workers dropping bands on the pavement when delivering mail.

Richard, who moved to The Byway just over four years ago, also encountered the problem when he lived in Alexandra Road.

He said Moor Drive is littered every day, with sometimes up to 13 on one side of the pavement.

Although he used to return them to the post office, the grandfather-of-four has had two spinal operations and can no longer bend down to pick them up.

He said: “The problem is that I take the dog out and the dog is attracted to the bright red colour.

“If she manages to get one, I’ve so far been lucky in that she has managed to pass them through her system.

“If these people see the sort of agony a dog goes through when they swallow these and have to have an operation. Our last dog was in absolute agony and it was pitiful to watch.”

Liberal Democrat Victoria Ward Councillor Anthony Hill has written to Royal Mail about the problem. He said: “I have received numerous complaints over the years about the waste and the environmental issue of the bands.

“Recently another factor has been concern from residents about their dogs eating the bands and the consequences.”

Royal Mail sent a letter apologising for the inconvenience and said staff are reminded of their responsibilities but some get dropped by mistake because of the quantity of post delivered.

I have a few dogs and none of them show any interest in eating elastic bands (their own poo yes but never elastic bands no).

i dont drop bands,one of the reasons ive never used the red polo shirts is i use the right pocket for bands removed from bundles
its habit
however i bet ive still managed to drop them without knowing
i think we should make them in camouflage ;)

also yes the newer bands snap so easily its unreal

I am sure it is just the band's that are red why not a postmans bag he goes for or the van or the postboxes if a dog goes for anything it should have a muzzle!.

I have dogs,1 will eat or chew anything,he especialy enjoys mobile phones and trainers,but rubber bands are just not to his taste.
Cant belive RM Response,they say some are dropped accidently de to the amount of mail.
