DISABLED customers have been left out in the cold after a post office removed its access ramp.
The ramp at Blackburn Post Office was taken away a week ago amidst health and safety fears – but has yet to be replaced.
There is no alternative entry point for customers in wheelchairs or with walking sticks and some have had to be served by staff outside.
Lillian Sleigh, of Wensley Fold, Blackburn, refused to let staff count out her cash on the street after she was unable to get into the Ainsworth Street site.
Lillian, who has been in a wheelchair since birth, said: “When I arrived I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
“I had to send a passer-by inside to ask how I was supposed to get served.
“They offered to lift my chair up the step but it is far too heavy for that – so they said they would just serve me in the street.
“I could not believe it – in this day and age when anyone could come by and snatch your money from you.
“It is also far too cold to be sitting around on the pavement.”
A spokesman for the Post Office said: “A temporary ramp outside Blackburn Post Office was removed last Friday by the landlord on health and safety grounds.
“Post Office Ltd and the subpostmaster are concerned about the impact on custo-mers and are working together to ensure that a permanent ramp is installed as soon as possible.
“It is hoped that this work will be completed within the next few days.”
