TODAY marks the start of a major new campaign, spearheaded by the Evening Leader, to clear up a brutal stain on the recent history of Flintshire.
For more than six years the murder of a Flintshire postman, who was beaten to death in a frenzied attack while doing his round, has remained unsolved.

Paul Savage, 30, was attacked while delivering letters in Clayton Road, Mold, on the morning of February 4, 2003.

He died at the Wrexham Maelor hospital later that day and no-one has ever been charged with his murder.

The Evening Leader has now joined forces with the dedicated team of police officers who are reinvestigating the case, to help eliminate the shadow that has been cast over Mold by this vicious crime.

Detective Sergeants Steve Challinor and Kevin Evans, who play a vital role in the 15-strong major incident team who are revisiting the circumstances of Mr Savage's murder, say they believe someone in the town holds the key to those responsible being brought to justice – and the Leader is calling on its readers to show the killers that the people of Flintshire will not tolerare serious violent crime on the county's streets.

They are urging anyone who was in or around Clayton Road at the time of the incident, or who thinks they could hold information that could help in any way, to take a bold step and come forward.

And the Evening Leader is backing them, with our new campaign 'Justice for Paul', aimed at cracking the crime once and for all.

Over the coming weeks we will be profiling the work being undertaken to find vital clues.

DS Challinor said: "We are not just determined to solve this case. We are truly hopeful and positive that we will really get somewhere.

"There are people in Mold who hold the information that could bring this before a court.

"The modern police force has systems and schemes in place to support people who fear reprisals after sharing information with the authorities and these schemes have developed a lot in the years since Paul's murder."

DS Evans said: "There are other ways to share information in confidence without dealing directly with the police, such as through the Evening Leader.

"We want people to work together to support this new campaign, if Mold is to remain the safe and pleasant town it has always been."

Mr Savage's death is Mold's only unsolved murder in police records.

Since the reinvestigation of the case began last month, officers say they have uncovered even more information and are revisiting witness statements and forensic evidence.

DS Challinor added: "Mold is my home town and I take the investigation of this killing personally. I feel that the people of Mold should take it personally too.

"The North Wales Police major incident team will provide all the support possible for this very worthwhile campaign."

A £100,000 is offered for any information that leads to the prosecution of Mr Savage's killers.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DS Challinor or DS Evans on 0845 607 1002, or through the Evening Leader at justiceforpaul@nwn.co.uk or call 01352 707 751.

All information will be treated in confidence.
