About 100 postal workers are expected to meet the Communication Workers Union in Corby today.
They will be talking about developments surrounding the Royal Mail pension deficit and the union's campaign to keep the company a publicly-owned postal service.

The union has written to county councillors and MPs asking for support opposing Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, Peter Mandelson, who wants to privatise parts of the postal delivery service.

CWU Branch Secretary Mick Fitzmaurice said: "We expect wholehearted support from Labour Party activists, councillors and MPs who have historically stood shoulder to shoulder with the CWU to oppose privatisation in any way, shape or form."

CWU branch chairman Mark Batterham said: "Privatisation of Royal Mail is a massive issue for the CWU and its members.

"The Government plans are a defining moment in the relationship between the union and the government.

"The relationship will be severely strained if Peter Mandelson is allowed to continue unchallenged with his privatisation plans.

"The government's actions are placing a huge strain on our relationship with the Labour Party."
