PILFERING postman Kevin Allen has been jailed for plundering cash from children's birthday cards.

Newmarket-based postie Allen stole DVDs, cash and gift vouchers from the mail over a period of two years.

Allen, 47, was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison by magistrates at Bury St Edmunds yesterday (Thursday, 12 February). He had admitted three charges at an earlier hearing including stealing cash and vouchers worth £200 from up to 100 letters, stealing five DVDs and stealing £45 from letters.

Magistrate Meg Clibbon told him a jail term was the only option because the thefts harmed the public's confidence in Royal Mail and Allen tried to divert the blame to other staff.

"You stole loving greetings contained in the cards which were never intended to be shared with post office workers," she said.

Investigators found plastic bags containing torn envelopes and greetings cards when they searched Allen's home in Manderston Road, Newmarket.

Allen - a postman for 18 years - resigned once the game was up.

Jeremy Kendall, mitigating, said Allen gave £200 to investigators when he was caught. Allen stole the money after he got into financial difficulties.

How exactly, can they be mitigating circumstances?
He gave £200 back to investigators?
Of course he did! They'd caught him, he was trying to buy a lighter sentence! :arrrghhh

He stole after he got into financial difficulties?
Look around you. There are millions of people in financial difficulties, because of the Credit Crunch. Are they all stealing?
Of course not! :arrrghhh  :evil/mad

Yes, I have to agree, we all have times in our lives when things are tough, but there is no excuse for stealing, there are enough people who can and will help if you have problems.

Three square meals a day for 36 weeks, no slop outs, recreational facilities with presumably coloured T.V. included. Me thinks he has got of lightly. A disgrace to the business and a complete thorn in the side to honest to GOD hard working brothers and sisters in the postal industry.
