The national postal service armed its employees with 25 tons of dog treats last year as they faced off against angry four-legged adversaries on their routesThe postal service handed out 3,000 boxes of dog treats to employees last year in an effort to pacify vicious dogs on delivery routes. It amounted to more than 25 tons of food for Fido.
Ebbe Andersen of Post Danmark said that many employees had resorted to carrying the dog biscuits and had been given good advice on how to deal with dogs that weren’t exactly acting like man’s best friend.
The Animal Protection Society came together with the Danish Kennel Club and Post Danmark to produce a video for delivery personnel on how to deal with strange dogs.
Unfortunately these efforts were not enough and 335 deliverymen were bitten by dogs last year. It resulted in 45 employees taking sick leave, of which 18 had to stay away from work for more than three days.
‘Dog bites are a big problem. A bite can be similar to many other threats and can give a lifelong fear of coming into contact with dogs. We are taking this very seriously,’ said Andersen.
