Crowthorne Royal Mail delivery office faces closure

Crowthorne may lose its Royal Mail delivery office in a review of the company’s infrastructure.

If the Kings Road office is closed, villagers from Crowthorne and Sandhurst will have to travel to Bracknell to collect registered mail and parcels.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “We are reviewing operations in the area and we are looking at a number of options including the possible relocation of Crowthorne delivery office.

“No final decisions have been made.”

The spokesman has denied a rumour that the office will close in seven weeks.

A Royal Mail worker told The Standard postmen would have to be bussed in and out of Crowthorne – which would mean later deliveries.

The man, who did not wish to be identified, added: “It goes without saying that, if this goes ahead, it will be detrimental for the people of Crowthorne.

“I cannot stress enough how urgent this is if action is to be taken to stop this happening in Crowthorne.”

Tina McKenzie-Boyle, chairman of Crowthorne Parish Council, said: “I’m absolutely devastated for the whole community if that’s what they’re trying to do.

“It’s a total disgrace. It’s ridiculous for people to have to go into Bracknell for their letters, especially when people haven’t got their heads around the post system and more letters aren’t getting delivered.”

This office was also reviewed in 2007 but Crowthorne Parish Council and Wokingham Without Parish Council helped to persuade Royal Mail to keep it open.

Cllr McKenzie-Boyle said: “We’ve been fighting for this for years.”
