Royal Mail bosses have banned postal deliveries in a Bradford residential street after an incident involving a dog.

But householders in Penfield Grove, Clayton, are furious about the decision which they say stems from problems at only one house.

Every house has received a letter from the Royal Mail stating that a postal worker had been “attacked” and “until work has been carried out to secure or remove the dog/s, the delivery of all mail will cease on Penfield Grove”.

Since December, postal deliveries had been carried out by a Royal Mail manager.

But now householders have been instructed to collect their mail at a sorting office in Thornton Road. One resident, Donna Douglas, said her four-year-old son will not receive his birthday cards next week if the matter is not immediately resolved.

She said: “It’s just not justifiable.

“We’re at work all day so we can’t get our post, my son won’t get his birthday cards.

“Why should we be penalised?

“The Royal Mail should be sorting it out.”

Her neighbour David Crawford, 59, said: “The Royal Mail is punishing a whole street. It’s just not on.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “If the old lady across the road who has no transport doesn’t get her council tax bill, and then the bailiffs come round – what then?”

The Royal Mail letters contain the address where it claims the incident had taken place.

When interviewed by the Telegraph & Argus, the occupants admitted their Bull Mastiff dog had been involved in an incident and they were working with the Royal Mail to solve the prolem.

A spokesman for the family, who would not be named, said: “It should be sorted out soon.

“We are getting a fence built in our yard and since he broke off his chain before, we got him a stronger chain.

“He probably just wanted to play.

“We are surprised the Royal Mail has taken this action.”

A Royal Mail spokesman told the T&A: “Clearly it is the last resort to suspend deliveries.

“We continue to work with the customer or dog owner to resolve the issue.

“We do apologise to the affected customers.

“The service will be resumed as soon as we can be sure it is safe.

“Customers affected should contact the local delivery office if they wish to discuss it further.”

John Tracey, Bradford branch secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: “If a postman feels threatened in any way he hasn’t to deliver.

“The postman goes to their manager and they then decide what to do. Sometimes there is no alternative but to suspend deliveries.”

It always baffles me that we are constantly told that we work for such an antiquated service that nobody really needs anymore and can't make any money and yet as soon as a few householders don't recieve their mail it gets on the front page of a newspaper. Go figure!

The resident didn't care about the Postman and the Dog situation until it affects them, its probably a sink estate full of Dole dossers, smackheads, scroates of all descriptions by all accounts.

It's obvious that the owners have no idea how to look after a dog (especially a large hunting breed like the bull mastif) and I think the council should be looking to take the dog off them and give it to someone who can look after the dog properly, I had the same problem with a mastif being loose so anytime I saw it I just took the entire areas mail back to the office (around 20 houses) and reported it to my DOM (who did nothing because it was too much work).

No, that's Buttershaw. Clayton is a bit rough but it's by no means anything like as bad. A pretty average kind of place.
A dog on the loose like that is the whole streets problem, not just the owners.

How the hell can these people afford to keep these dogs ? - unless they're dealing or something - and how can they exercise a thing like that ?

True - Delivery staff and other staff working outdoors understand that they are under no obligation to
collect or deliver mail to an address where they feel threatened by a dog at large and that every attack or incident of menacing must be reported to management

Partially True - The postman/postwoman does indeed report to their Line Manager/DOM any incidents of dog attack or dog menace however, it is Royal Mail's own Policy namely Dealing with Dog Attacks - Good Practice Guide that holds the field and Line Managers/DOM's should be following
it's guidelines strictly to the letter

The Good Practice Guide has been produced for Line Managers/DOM's to enable them to carry out Royal Mail's policy on dealing with dog attacks.
