The Government has said that industrial action taken earlier this week by postal workers is unacceptable, and that staff who refused to carry out their duties yesterday will not be paid.
"On the 17th December 2004, the Union signed a written agreement with the Government," a Government spokesperson said, "that staff would not take industrial action before any issue in dispute had been submitted to arbitration. The action taken by staff earlier this week is in flagrant breach of this commitment. Staff should not assume that they can retain the benefit of agreements which they breach.
"Furthermore, staff are not entitled to refuse to recognise employees selected to act in management posts to cover the absence of the post-holder. Management, and not staff, will select persons to act in posts. For the post in question this is done on a roster basis between three members of staff, and this will continue to be the case. The female officer in question will continue to be appointed whenever it is her turn. Management has every confidence in her.
"Any employee who fails to take instructions from a duly appointed supervisory grade will be disciplined accordingly. Staff who refused to carry out their duties yesterday will not be paid."
