An East Reading politician is calling on a Government minister to help halt the closure of the Royal Mail sorting office in Caversham Road.
Labour’s Parliamentary hopeful Anneliese Dodds made the plea after Royal Mail announced it still planned to close the sorting office and route all mail to and from Reading via Swindon by road.
Ms Dodds has now written to Pat McFadden, minister for employment relations and postal affairs.
She said: “We’ve recently heard from Gordon Brown the Government is to increase its support of green energy and invest in environmentally-sound infrastructure.
“Now is an excellent time to reassess the impact of the proposed closure of Reading’s sorting office on the local and national environment.
“The move will lead to a massive injection of exhaust fumes and carbon emissions into the local environment which could easily be prevented.”
