Green Party strongly oppose any sell-off of the Royal Mail

SCARBOROUGH'S Green Party has hit out at the proposed sell-off of part of the Royal Mail.
It follows Business Secretary Lord Mandel-son’s backing of a call to sell upto one third of the company to a foreign buyer.

The move has already proved highly controversial with upto 100 MPs threatening a backbench rebellion and the Communications Workers Union has also said it will disaffiliate from the Labour Party should the sell-off go ahead.

Prospective Green Party Candidate Councillor for Scarborough and Whitby, Councillor Dilys Cluer, said: “We strongly oppose any privatisation of Royal Mail. The Green Party has long campaigned against transferring essential public services to private hands. Privatisation benefits big business interests, not consumers. We have seen this in the NHS, BT and the railways, to name a few instances.”

She added: “A report by Postwatch, the consumer watchdog, has failed to find any significant benefits to individual users from the liberalisation of the postal service. Private companies will cherry-pick the most profitable parts of the organisation which currently fund essential but unprofitable services such as rural collections, leaving the public to pick up the bill in the future and leaving us with a poorer service.”
