A Malpas postman braved sub-zero temperatures in his shorts this week to raise £500 in memory of his late aunt.

Richie Howells, 38, of Larch Grove has worn shorts to work since the start of summer last year and now people are sponsoring him to keep them on to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

“I lost my aunt Shirley Gunter, who died suddenly of a heart attack on October 24,” said Ritchie.

“I had wanted to do something in her memory as the heart foundation is a cause close to my heart following the loss of my aunt Shirley at the age of 55.” he added.

“Losing her has left a big void in our lives.”

In just three days customers have donated £500 to Mr Howells” cause as he carries out his rounds in the Malpas.

Mr Howells, who has children Joseph 16, Evie 6 and Ruby 8 months, said his daughter Evie donated £5 from her moneybox as soon as she heard about his fundraising.

His wife Sally, 35, who works for Newport City Council, said her husband is over-whelmed with the response.

“We want to thank all those who have sponsored Ritchie. It’s phenomenal and so generous,” she added.
