Bid for Welwyn Hatfield post office 'Watchdog'

CAMPAIGNERS who fought in vain to keep a post office open are preparing to keep a watchful eye on branches that were saved from the axe.

The council of war set up to try to save the Handside branch in Marsden Road, WGC, is looking to form a users group.

This would monitor performance of the post offices throughout Times Territory that are still open.

The move is the brainchild of Tony Skottowe, leader of the Lib Dem group on Welwyn Hatfield Council.

He told the WHT he wanted to create a "powerful weapon" to ensure Post Office chiefs deliver a decent service.

He said: "The idea behind the users group would be to gather information about the quality of the service in the few remaining post offices in the borough.

"The main office in Howardsgate, about which various 'promises' were made on service levels as justifications for closing the heavily used Handside branch, would be an obvious candidate for such a group to monitor."

Cllr Skottowe said he wanted to hear people's views as to whether there should be one large borough-wide group, or smaller factions concentrating on particular geographical areas within Welwyn Hatfield.

Respondents should also say what they would want to bring to the group to help make it work.
