Fred, town postman for 42 years, dies

FREDERICK Harold Oliver who delivered post in Battle for 42 years has died aged 85.
Fred was a well-liked member of the local community who had time for everyone and would always stop to chat.

He battled through the snows in the winter of 1963 to ensure post got delivered and would often take time to read letters to older people who were partially sighted.

During the war Fred served in Europe taking part in the Allied push toward Germany as an Army driver.

He was among those who helped to clear the Nazi concentration camps - an experience that haunted him.

Fred served despite initially failing a medical. He returned and persuaded the medical officer to let him join up.

Fred devoted much of his life to caring for wife Elsa, who had a stroke at the age of 47.

He did this while still working a double shift at the Post Office.

Son John said: "Everyone knew him and he would do anything for anyone.

He was the sort of man who would give you his last penny if you asked for it.

"He was a generous and jovial man who led a very simple life but loved talking to people."

John added: "I would like to thank staff at the Conquest Hospital's Murray Ward, who cared for my father and ensured he was comfortable.

Fred leaves behind his wife Elsa, three children: Adriana, Esme and John and grandchildren James, Ben, Sam, Lucy, Zachery, Amber and Joshua.

His funeral will be held on December 30 at 2pm at Our Lady Immaculate and St Michaels R C church in Mount Street, Battle.
