Thought for the month with the Rev Tim Hanson

IT’S time to spare a thought for your postman. They face a lot don’t they?

They always get called ‘Pat’ (I suppose that might have been funny the first time but they must be a bit sick of it now), they have to deal with an intolerable amount of red elastic bands and they have to get up early.

It must be especially hard at this time of year, they have so much to deliver and it’s cold – Go on, say thank you to the postman.

Imagine life without them; who would bring those cards from people who you can’t remember?

It’s the word ‘sent’ that sums up the postman’s work – they deliver what has been sent.

‘Sent’ is a Christmas word. It sums up what God has done. John 3:16 says: ‘God so loved the world that He sent his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him, should not perish but have everlasting life’.

God sent Jesus to die so that our sins can be forgiven.

Jesus gives us forgiveness for the past, he stands with us in the present as we walk through a painful world, he gives us hope for the future.

There seems little point in remembering the event of Jesus’ birth unless we understand it – the meaning of the event is too important to ignore.

If you don’t know what it means, why not find a church and ask them. They should know.

Happy Christmas.

PS: Apologies to the postwomen – I know that you do a great job too. Postperson sounds so clumsy.
