Residents have reacted with dismay after discovering their Christmas cards and presents could have been stolen.
Homeowners in Franchise Street and the surrounding area, Chesham, received a letter from the Post Office informing them of a theft from a 'mail pouch drop' nearby.
Mary Hyland, a retired postal and telegraph officer of Franchise Street, said: "We are still receiving our cards and I knew nothing about it until I had the letter.

"I used to work in the post office many years ago and it's nothing like it was. Why do they need the box when they never used to have them? They used to sort it in the Broadway and go from there."

Di Burnett is taking bookings for drama workshops and is worried people's bookings may have gone astray. She said: "I realised we hadn't had any post which I thought was strange.

"If anyone has sent post to this area around December 3 and haven't heard back, there is a chance it hasn't come through."

Mail pouch drops are based on streets, in shops or homes of staff, and are used to allow a post staff to drop off mail while they complete part of their round, to prevent them carrying a heavy load Royal Mail spokesman Nick Martens said.

He added: "We can confirm the theft of a small number of items from a mail pouch drop in an area in Chesham in early December. The police are investigating this theft and anyone with information should contact them. Customers have been written to and if they have concerns should call our customer services."

Why do they need the box when they never used to have them?

Would it be anything to do with the massive amount of mail we deliver now or does he expect us to carry up to 100kg in one go .

Well said, i feel for those who have lost mail, but many postal rounds do not have enough drop off areas for bags without doing with out them all together would result in us not delivering much of the mail. I regulary have 9-12 bags weighting between 8-16kgs each.
