No post strike until new year

POSTAL workers in Coventry have ruled out further industrial action until the new year after a crippling Christmas walk-out was called off at the 11th hour.

Union chiefs halted yesterday’s planned strike after “some progress” was made in a row over the closure of 30 UK mail centres, including the Bishop Street sorting office in Coventry.

Mick Kavanagh, of the Communication Workers’ Union, said there had been some headway over members’ terms and conditions – including travelling and relocation costs – if the centre was to move 50 miles away to Northampton.

But he warned that further strikes were in the pipeline over the government’s plans to privatise Royal Mail.

“The reason we suspended the strike is because progress was made with Royal Mail over terms and conditions,” he said.

“This was not about spoiling people’s Christmases, but we have to protect our members.

“The people of Coventry now need to get behind the campaign to keep Royal Mail in the public’s hands and not to accept 50,000 job losses.

"It’s a betrayal by this government if they privatise Royal Mail.

"There will be a new battle in the new year.”
