Solidarity with the strikes on Friday

SIX MAIL centres will strike on Friday 19 December against Royal Mail’s closure programme.
The offices need your support. It is very important that nobody does their work or cooperates with any management attempts to undermine the action.

These strikers are at the sharp end of the fightback—and we need a fightback like never before.
We are only beginning to see the true extent of the mail centre strategy. In the longer term a huge swathe of the network will be rolled up, leading to thousands of job losses.

Do you really fancy looking for another job at the moment?

Management, backed up by government ministers, are tearing into postal workers at every level.

Delivery workers are under the cosh, facing huge pressure to finish delivery routes in totally unrealistic times.

Bosses are programming the Pegasus software system that measures routes in a way that assumes you fly round the route at 4MPH. In Belgium it’s programmed to 2.4 MPH.

Royal Mail is using this system to meet financial savings without considering the physical realities of delivery rounds.

This is putting pressure on delivery workers and leading to bullying and harassment.

CWU has an agreement with Royal Mail to jointly review all aspects of Pegasus, but the business has reneged on this and is pushing ahead with damaging changes without input from the union. This is having disastrous consequences on services in some parts of the country.

The truth is that management are interpreting the pay and modernisation agreement signed a year ago any way they want.
They have told the whole of North East England that they now feel they have the right to extend the current delivery town spans from 3.5 hours to anything they see fit!

Royal Mail’s delivery strategy is (surprise surprise) based on not paying for change and no protection of jobs.

There is no shorter working week, no maintenance of average earnings or anything remotely beneficial. It is a strategy for cleansing full-time jobs and employing tens of thousands of part-timers on poverty wages and rubbish conditions.
Whether its pensions, or closures or deliveries, workers need to pull together.

Why are we still cooperating with management over savings when the other side is clearly out to get us?

If it goes on like this, the union must withdraw from the pay and modernisation agreement and prepare for a national ballot.
We really do have a simple choice.

We can all hope that by sucking up to our management that we will get a preferential deal while the rest of the workforce can go under.

That will enable bosses to use divide and rule to beat us all down.

Or we can stick together and fight for proper national agreements that protect us at a time when the world economy is going under.

A good way to start the fightback is to get behind the mail centre strikes on Friday.

Well it was on BBC news that Liverpool will not be going out because of a challenge by Royal Mail - pretty much what was predicted and should surely have been foreseen by CWU - but as a poster commented that a union leader had been on TV this lunchtime and looked totally disinterested. Sums it up really.
