An investigation has been launched after an Irvine woman's personal documents were found lying in a car park.

The documents had been sent by Royal Mail's recorded delivery and the electronic tracking showed that they had been delivered to her home address.

Margaret Campbell was horrified to learn an envelope containing her bank statements, wage slips, house lease and driving licence had been left in the town's East Road car park by Royal Mail.

She told the Irvine Herald: "The envelope was open but nothing seems to have been taken.

"Anyone could have had a look and taken a note of all my personal details."

Ms Campbell is concerned that the envelope contained enough information for someone to steal her identity or remove cash from her bank.

She had posted the documents to North Ayrshire Council in support of her housing benefit application.

The package went missing when the council posted the documents back to her home using Royal Mail recorded delivery service.

The envelope was found in the car park by a member of the public who passed it to a traffic warden who was working nearby.

He recognised Ms Campbell from her passport photograph and delivered the package to her at work.

Ms Campbell said: "The reason that people use recorded delivery is because it is meant to be safe. I have put in an official complaint with Royal Mail."

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "The security of the mail is of paramount importance to Royal Mail and an urgent investigation has been launched into this incident.

"Royal Mail would like to apologise to the customer concerned."
