POSTAL workers across North Wales are gearing up to handle millions more extra cards and presents as the busy festive season gets under way.

A festive genie from Royal Mail’s first class pantomime stamp is wishing everyone a Merry Christmas with a timely reminder to post in good time to friends and loved ones.

Postal workers at Deeside Delivery Office, Queensferry, donned festive tinsel and Santa hats to welcome the pantomime character and help deliver a festive reminder of Royal Mail’s recommended last posting dates for overseas and UK mail.

Last posting dates for Christmas cards in the UK are Thursday, December 18, for second class and Saturday, December 20, for first class.

For guaranteed special delivery, post by Tuesday, December 23.

The last posting day for western Europe is today, Friday, and for elsewhere the date has already passed.

Nationally, a bumper mailbag of more than two billion cards and letters is expected between now and Christmas.

In North Wales, Royal Mail will handle more than seven million cards and parcels a week as Christmas fast approaches, delivering festive greetings to customers living in the LL and CH postcode areas, from Mold, Flint, Wrexham and Deeside, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl, Llandudno, Bangor, to Denbigh Holyhead and Caernarfon.

Royal Mail area general manager for Chester and North Wales, Simon Williams, said: “Our postmen and women work round the clock up to and including Christmas Eve and the more people that post first class and use postcodes, the more confident everyone can be of a good Christmas.”

Across most parts of the UK, Royal Mail will undertake extra delivery rounds on the morning of Sunday, December 21, and between 6pm and 9pm on Monday and Tuesday, 22 and 23 December, to give customers a second chance to take delivery of parcels unable to be delivered during the standard deliveries.

The opening hours of all of Royal Mail’s 1,400 delivery offices will also be extended from December 15, increasing convenience for customers who need to pick up parcels and packets.

For the first time, delivery offices will also be open on the afternoon of Sunday, December 21.

There will be no collections or deliveries on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The last delivery and collection before Christmas will be on Christmas Eve.
