Santa's plea for a Milton Keynes Post Office

Santa has supported a campaign to save one of the city's threatened post offices.

A model of Father Christmas riding an old-fashioned delivery bicycle has been set up calling for the council's help to rescue Weston Underwood Post Office.

A note written to Milton Keynes Council's cabinet and signed by Santa says: 'Please help to ensure this is not my last visit to Weston Underwood Post Office, thanks.'

Mark Covington, whose family have run the branch for more than 100 years, said they have put up the model Santa outside the Post Office during Christmas for a number of years and thought it would be a good way to put their message across to the council.

The cabinet is set to review its choice not to intervene and save four threatened branches in Milton Keynes at a meeting next Tuesday, December 16.

Last month the cabinet said throwing a lifeline to branches for three years was not 'financially viable' despite the efforts of several parish councils, which promised funding and support for their local Post Offices.

The decision was called-in to a cross-party scrutiny committee by residents in Little Brickhill, Weston Underwood and Ravenstone.

The panel heard evidence that the financial figures provided by the Post Office were riddled with mistakes, so the cabinet decided to reconsider its decision based on accurate information.

A total of six branches are closing across the city, including Little Brickhill, Weston Underwood, Conniburrow, Fishermead, Water Eaton and Fenny Stratford.
