Royal Mail charged a Leeds customer £1.27 for a piece of unstamped mail sent to him by...Royal Mail.
To make matters worse the communication was a form letter asking him how efficient he felt the mail service is.

And he had to go and collect it.

Andrew McAdam, 32, got his usual postal delivery at his home in Grange Crescent in Yeadon.

It included a card from his local sorting office saying they had a piece of mail for him that was unstamped and informing him that if he wanted to collect it he should call at the Yeadon sorting office where he would have to pay £1.27.

Mr McAdam, who is a chef, went along and paid the £1.27 for the letter, which was addressed to "The Occupier" at his home address.

When he opened it he found the Royal Mail form letter asking him for his comments on the efficiency of the service.

"I immediately went back inside and said 'I know £1.27 is not a lot of money, but when it is from you guys it is a little bit cheeky'.

"The postman's face dropped in amazement and he apologized and did look suitably embarrassed.

"He wouldn't let me keep the comments card to fill in my comments. He said there had been loads."

Since the incident Mr McAdam has received another card telling him there is unstamped mail waiting for him. He suspects it will be the same again, so he hasn't bothered to collect.

"How many more people have received this letter I wonder?" he said.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the the incident was being investigated.

But she said the company was unable to say more as it could not locate the postcard which was sent to Mr McAdam.
