THE Royal Mail have come under attack for changes to the pattern of mail deliveries in Lanark and Carluke area.
Residents have been complaining that, in some cases, they are not getting mail deliveries until late afternoon.
Now two politicians have raised their concerns with the Royal Mail.
Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has written to the Royal Mail on behalf of constituents in the Lanark and Carluke area who are concerned about changes to the pattern of mail deliveries in the area.
She is being backed by Clydesdale West SNP Councillor Ian Gray who claims that staffing changes by Royal Mail appear to have led to instances of mail not being delivered until late into the afternoon in Lanark, Carluke and nearby villages, including Braidwood and Crossford.
Aileen Campbell has now written to Ian McKay, Royal Mail’s director of Scottish affairs, seeking clarification.
In her letter to Royal Mail, Aileen Campbell said: “It has been reported to me the introduction of new staffing arrangements seem to have brought about a drastic reduction in service, with mail throughout areas of the towns not being delivered until late in the afternoon.
“I also understand that delivery staff themselves have expressed concern about the work being required of them in the time available for deliveries.
“I would be grateful if you could outline what changes to delivery staffing and times have been made in Lanark, Carluke and wider Clydesdale area, and what steps the Post Office is taking to monitor the impact of any changes. It would also be helpful if you could indicate whether you have received complaints or comments on these changes from members of the public or staff members.”
The MSP told the Advertiser: “These reports are very concerning, especially as they come on the back of Post Office closures across the Clydesdale area.
“The Royal Mail is a public service, and should be run as such. It would be extremely disappointing if people in Lanark, Carluke and neighbouring villages are receiving their post much later in the day simply so the Royal Mail can squeeze yet more profits out of its public service provision.
“I hope the Royal Mail can answer these concerns quickly and folk across Clydesdale are able to receive the level of postal services they deserve.”
Carluke councillor Ian Gray added: “This issue is causing serious concern. I hope Royal Mail sit up and take notice of these complaints. This isn’t first or second class mail – this is third class service.”
