BY LAURA HANNAM
Royal Mail has announced that plans to close its mail centre in Bletchley are to go ahead.
The city's mail is to be sorted in a new 'super' mail centre alongside post from Coventry and Northampton from spring 2010.
The fight to save the Mail Centre in Dawson Road by the local branch of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) has been lost.
The union has claimed the closure will put up to 600 jobs at risk in the city.
The mail centre's processing operations are to be transferred to a proposed new modern state-of-the-art mail centre at junction 15a of the M1 in Northamptonshire in 2010.
The plans were pitched to Royal Mail staff earlier this year in a review of its mail processing operations.
Royal Mail says the Dawson Road building is no longer fit for a modern mail distribution network as it is not big enough to take in new technology and processing equipment.
Area general manager Dennis Murphy, said: "These plans will improve efficiency, give customers better value and provide employees with a more modern environment to work in, in what is now a highly competitive postal market.
"It will mean changes for our employees, but we have a great track record of managing our people through change and taking into account natural turnover and flexibility we hope everyone who wants to stay with Royal Mail will be able to do so.
"Our employees have been aware of our proposals since the review was launched in April of this year and there remains plenty of time to discuss the impact of the plans with their families and consider their future options.
"We remain fully committed to supporting our employees as the plan is deployed."
The review does not affect delivery offices in Milton Keynes, which will remain open, so customers would not have to travel elsewhere to collect mail and deliveries would not be affected.

Hang on Royal Mail its going to take longer to get the mail to the delivery offices unless your laying on more vans and opening delivery offices up at night.
