POSTAL services in Cardiff returned to normal today after a blaze at the Royal Mail sorting office left thousands of people without mail yesterday.
All 150 workers were evacuated from the sorting office in Penarth Road after a fire broke out in a loading bay just before 9am yesterday.
No-one was hurt in the blaze, which damaged the delivery office and four post vans, but it caused postal services in the capital to grind to a halt.
Today, a Royal Mail spokesman said: “The clean-up at the fire damaged delivery office at the Penarth Road site has now commenced at the same time as the business of delivering mail to customers gets back to normal.
“Building and structural engineers have examined the affected site and have declared that the area is safe to continue operations.
“All timed deliveries to local businesses have been completed and the job of delivering the backlog of mail to social customers is well underway. We
fully expect that all customers will get their mail by the end of the day.
“With the re-opening of the site, customers are now able to drop off their mail or collect Private Box or left items from the Enquiry Office as usual.
“All collections from businesses and post boxes in the Cardiff area have not been affected.
Paul Kelly, Royal Mail area manager, added: “I would like to thank all our managers, postmen and postwomen from neighbouring offices who rallied
around to ensure that all the mail was delivered today.
“I would also like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding whilst we have come to terms with the results of the fire.”
Royal Mail said that any customers who have not received mail should call the Customer Services team on 08457 740 740.

A serious fire occurred yesterday morning at the Cardiff Mail Centre and delivery office site. The fire occurred in the loading dock area. The Fire Service attended the blaze and staff were evacuated from the site and eventually sent home. No one was injured and no mail was damaged in the fire. Damage to the delivery office was sustained, mainly smoke damage due to the high level of smoke and fumes generated by the fire and four vans were damaged. Deliveries have obviously been disrupted and staff were dispersed to alternative locations during the clean up with normal operations and service expected to resume by the end of the week.
Investigations by the Fire Service are underway and are currently at an early stage. We are awaiting the outcome of those investigations.
The CWU Health, Safety and Environment Department are informed that the actual 'ignition source' has yet to be identified but it is apparent from the preliminary assessments that the polythene "shrink wrap/cling film" used by new suppliers of a bulk delivery of pallets of new perstop letter trays was the initial 'fuel source' which in turn caught the trays and pallets on fire.
To that end as precautionary measures, instructions were issued by Royal Mail Letters yesterday to all Offices that:-
'shrink wrap/cling film' used on any bulk storage pallets such as is currently being used on pallets of perstop letter trays should be removed and safely disposed of. The instructions continue that "once the 'shrink wrap/cling film'
has been removed care will be needed to ensure that the load on such pallets are secured and stable for subsequent movement. Alternative securing arrangements for bulk movements are being investigated."
It is important to ensure that housekeeping is maintained at a high standard.
Checks should be made for any ignition sources during routine safety inspections.
Managers and staff have been asked to remain vigilant.
A Further report will be made in due course.
