Postman faces jail for letter dumping

A postman was today facing jail after admitting dumping 4,000 postal items because “he was fed up with his job”. He ditched mail in various locations.

Amritpal Singh Kandola, from Wolverhampton, dumped post in a recycling bin, near a KFC restaurant, his garage and even his own bedside drawer because he did not like finishing late.

The 25-year-old, of Uplands Avenue, Finchfield, appeared before city magistrates yesterday where he was told he could be jailed for nine months before his case was adjourned until Monday for reports.

He pleaded guilty to opening nine letters, causing criminal damage to 2,253 letters on one occasion and to 1,500 on another. He also admitted attempting to delay the transmission of 186 postal packets.

Mr John Dove, prosecuting, said Kandola had been employed at the mail centre in Sun Street for less than a month before he was suspended and arrested in July.

He told the court Royal Mail investigators had recovered 186 packets from a recycling skip in School Street, Coseley, and 423 letters and packets in his car. A search of his home found 1,508 letters in three sacks in his garage and a further 69 in his bedside drawer. Nine had been opened.

Mr Dove said: “He admitted what he had done. Asked why he said ‘because I’m an idiot, basically’.”

* Also appearing at the court was postman Stephen Haney, of Kirby Drive, Lower Gornal. The 32-year-old is accused of dumping 310 letters found in a recycling skip and of stealing £30 worth of gift cards from one packet. His case was adjourned until December 1.

Is it me or has there been a vast increase in this sort of thing in the last few years? It makes you wonder what the recruiting procedure is like these days.

Current trend appears to be on the increase but this could be due to the excellent efforts of the lads who report this type of news, and thereby draw it to our attention on the forum. As for the recruiting procedure these days - two words (total sham).

yes it is becoming a regular thing every week someone is lifted for dumping,and stealing I was told if I was having problems to contact the manager for help ,has that gone out of the window as we all have a work place coach to assist people struggling.

I agree it is a total sham maybe it may become worse with all the changes we have in store for 2009 .

The managers have made it clear that they don't care about anything but their bonuses.

Which brings me to another point - Why, with a company the size of RM, do DOM's still interview for job positions? Surely it would be a job for professional HR officers( ).
