The post office was boarded up after the incident in the early hours

The driver of a car which crashed into a post office in Kent is under arrest in hospital, where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

The man and his woman passenger had to be freed from the Vauxhall Calibra after it hit the building in High Street, Hadlow at 0215 GMT on Saturday.

The woman suffered minor injuries. Both are in a stable condition in the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.

The road was shut until 0615 GMT while emergency services were at the scene.

The post office has now been boarded up.

Kent Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the black Calibra as it travelled from Mereworth to Hadlow before the crash.

A spokeswoman said the vehicle failed to stop when asked to do so by a patrol car and was followed for a short distance by police.
