A 16-year-old is on trial for fatally wounding a 56-year-old postman in Zaamslag, a village in the southern Dutch province of Zeeland. The prosecution is demanding a five-year sentence, but the Public Prosecutor's Office want the youth to be tried as an adult for murder.

The youth was part of a group of vandals misbehaving on the night before the Queen's Day national holiday last April. After the postman gave the group a talking to, they set upon him. The man died from his injuries two days later in hospital.

The 16-year-old has admitted hitting the man on the head with a claw-hammer. A 17-year-old, who hit the man but did not kill him, was earlier given a community service order.

You'd think that with all that cannabis there they be a little more chilled out  but it does rubbish the tabloid press whenever they say that our teenagers are the worst in Europe (there are good kids and bad kids everywhere but our press likes us to be the worst).

We would probably have the same here if we had a Queens Day national holiday.
