The Tories under Major opted out of The Social Chapter i.e. Minimum Wage , Paid Holidays ; right to Union representation etc with the Maastricht Treaty : the likes of Hague and the CBI opposed the minimum wage saying it would cause unemployment - it didn't !- Dave Snooty and his Pals would like it further watered down along with H&S .

I did go to the meeting ( I was a member once and obviously naive ! ) when Ian McCartney spoke on it - it was a big stepforward from Major's Britain - However New Liebour didn't exactly shout it from the rooftops and they did go for the most watered down version of it possible due to pressure from the likes of the CBI

I actually welcome it as I've worked in Industries where they liked to turn the clock back 80-100 years back with the " You go to work when it's dark and we'll make you grateful for it "

The opt - out isn't exactly voluntary either - I've had the " Oh! , we've sent you your wage slip - it's only 3 weeks late , now we're asking you again to opt out from RM - two short words was my answer !
