THE closure of the Royal Mail sorting office in Corsham has left people in the town facing a 10-mile round trip to pick up undelivered parcels.

The 20 members of staff from the Stokes Road sorting office joined 106 of their colleagues from Chippenham in a new building on The Wessex Business Centre on Bumpers Farm in Chippenham last month.

But despite assurances of a parcel collection point remaining in Corsham, some residents have found themselves driving to Chippenham to pick up undelivered packages as there has been no alternative provision set up.

Town councillor Peter Davis said: “I have received many adverse comments about the sorting office moving.

“People are finding they have to travel to pick up a parcel when they shouldn’t have to.

“I think they are not fulfilling the terms of their contract if people are having to do a 10-mile round trip to go and pick up a parcel.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said they had looked at the possibility of maintaining a service in Corsham for undeliverable mail, however none of the local post offices could accommodate the number of packages involved.

He said a package which could not be delivered can be redelivered to a person’s address or any other local address free of charge at a mutually convenient date and time.

A Local Collect Service also means that for 50p the package could also be taken to a local post office branch for collection.
