CAMPAIGNERS trying to change the postcode of their Warwickshire village plan to picket Royal Mail offices in Birmingham.

Hawkesbury village is in the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth and comes under Warwickshire County Council - but it has a Coventry post-code.

Residents have been fighting for five years to change their CV6 postcode to the Warwickshire code of CV7. They say that living in one area but having the postcode of another has caused problems for emergency services, grant applications and deliveries of prescriptions, council publications and free newspapers.

Earlier this year, a group visited Downing Street to hand in a petition signed by more 1,100 people.

But Royal Mail has refused to change the postcode.

Steve Hick, who started the campaign with neighbour Bryan Bonsor, said: "Royal Mail are just being intransigent. They don't want to change it but we are going to keep going with our campaign.

"We handed them more than 400 letters from people supporting us and they were only able to show us one letter from someone objecting to changing the postcode."

He said some businesses in Hawkesbury Village had had their postcodes changed to CV7 and campaigners could not understand why the rest of the properties could not change their codes.

He has notified Royal Mail that the group will be demonstrating outside Birmingham Mail Centre on Friday, from 7am until 10am. About 15 people plan to go - with placards to highlight their cause.

Royal Mail has previously said it would not change a postcode unless there was an "overriding operational need to do so".
