More than 10,000 items of 'stolen' Royal Mail post found in Bury postal worker's home

More than 10,000 items of stolen mail found inside the home of a former Royal Mail worker in Bury are finally being sorted and delivered to rightful recipients alongside official covering letters

The items were recovered by Greater Manchester Police before being passed on to Royal Mail .

Officers discovered the items after searching the property following an arrest in connection with a separate offence this summer, the Manchester Evening News understands.

The number of items found was confirmed to be between 10,000 and 11,000. It's understood that the worker involved, who is believed to have been employed by Royal Mail in Bury for a number of years, is no longer with the business. Royal Mail has not confirmed whether the matter has been referred to police for a criminal investigation.

The M.E.N. understands each item of mail currently being held by Royal Mail will be delivered to its rightful recipient, along with a covering letter explaining the circumstances.

Since being handed over to Royal Mail by police, the mail has been kept at the Bury delivery office, on Wellington Street. It has since been sorted by delivery area and is now being prepared for delivery, it is understood.

Some of the items recovered are believed to have been damaged or tampered with in some way.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We take the security of mail very seriously. Following an arrest earlier this year, police found a quantity of mail at a property. Our teams have been working to recover and process the items so they can be returned to the postal network and delivered to customers."
